A Guided Tour of the Unacceptable (TOTU) Where when you can see it, or how to arrange a screening
A Guided Tour of the Unacceptable is a geographical and historical tour of the UK’s nuclearweapons on the Clyde and resistance to them, with archive footage from the sixties sit-downs, to canoes buzzing Trident, mass blockades, and 21st Century XR protesters.
Behind the camera, and editor of archive footage from the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (SCND) and Trident Ploughshares, is Ruth Barrie (Waltzer Films), with a stunning musical score from Scottish musicians including Rachel Sermanni, Karine Polwart, Ross Ainsle, Ryan Young and Ewan Mackenzie. The narrative was written by Janet Fenton, (Secure Scotland) and the film is co-directed by Ruth and Janet. The many contributors range from MSPs to activists, researchers and journalists from Scotland.
First conceived when the Covid pandemic precluded traditional tours for visitors. TOTU was created to celebrate the entry into force of the Treaty On The Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and dedicated to the Faslane Peace Camp in its 40th year of witness and action.
HOSTING
PLEASE GET IN TOUCH (see Alerts and Contacts page) if you’d like to host a community screening.
We can provide publicity resources, a programme with full credits, info on the organisations involved and technical support. We can help flexibly with a post-film discussion, by adding other elements to build an event, or just slot a screening into something you have already planned.
Secure Scotland works closely with Scottish CND and together we can ensure you will have a chance to join or even start a new SCND group, to make it a really memorable event. If we are not available to attend, we can enable a download for you, subject to agreement with a simple memorandum of understanding:
We ask you to agree the following terms:
NO ONLINE POSTING: Please do not upload or post TOTU on any other platforms, including streaming sites, social media, or any other websites.
NO SHARING THE DOWNLOAD LINK: Please do not share the link to anyone else, or make any edits to the film. It is provided for use only by the person we provide it to, and should be deleted after your screening.
IN PERSON SCREENINGS ONLY: TOTU is provided for in-person screenings only. Please do not use the link or show the film as an online event or virtual screening.
Please follow these simple guidelines to ensure that TOTU reaches the intended audience in the most impactful way.
UPCOMING SCREENINGS
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the US attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that introduced the world to the terrible effects of detonating nuclear weapons over civilian targets, there are several screenings of TOTU planned:
First, we will be showing TOTU on the 27th July at the WandA Community Lunch, which is also a last chance to see the current Secure Scotland exhibition, Beyond Human Rights, as we reflect on the connections and causalities between oppressive colonialism, nuclear escalation, profiteering arms trading and the Middle East catastrophe.
6th August (Hiroshima day) Scottish CND are hosting a screening of several short films at the Quaker Meeting House at 7.00pm including TOTU
7th August, there will be a screening of TOTU and a short vigil at Words and Actions at 6.00 (just before Scottish Socialist meeting there at 7.00 pm)
8th August The same programme of films, including TOTU that was shown on the 6th, will be repeated at Aberdeen Social Centre again at 7pm. This will be hosted by CND North East and you can get more details through their Facebook page.
There are several trailers for TOTU and related short films that can be accessed from Secure Scotland social media – SCND has copies of all of these too. We can also provide printed programmes with full credits to use at screenings. Please reach out to us if you have any questions, or if you would like our support in contact with musicians or other contributors or possible speakers or books for your event. Thank you for your co operation and support.
