SHIANT ISLANDS CATHEDRAL EXHIBITION

In her art Phillit Purrmann explores notions of ‚wild nature‘ and how humans relate to wildness in times
of climate and ecological crises. Trying to make sense of rather than despairing over present and future
uncertainties she seeks to challenge traditional, romantic and colonial ideas of wildness, and whether such
ideas can still serve the world in contemporary times of environmental disruption.

In her work, she creates wild landscapes out of composite ‚natural‘ and ‚man-made‘ bits of wilderness
she’s collected. The ‚Shiant Islands Cathedral‘ series brings together rock formations from the Shiant
Islands in the Outer Hebrides with abandoned-looking concrete structures alongside the Water of Leith
and in Lamlash Bay on Arran. Through this practice, Purrmann attempts to face the doom-inspiring
uncertainties ahead with open eyes, while not closing them to the beauty inherent to the world inspite of
them.
